Alaska Hiking Expeditions

This is our selection of guided hiking expeditions in northern and southern Alaska. You will be led by our wilderness experts who will ensure a safe and enjoyable trip; they will share their knowledge of backcountry travel so you can truly immerse yourself in the experience of Alaska.

Please note that the number of participants for each expedition is limited to eight, so please make your reservation for one of the trips shown below as soon as possible via email or phone. If you need a guide exclusively for your own group instead of joining a group on one of our suggested dates, please ask us.

Gear wise, you just need to bring your personal hiking equipment, we will provide superior quality expedition tents (Hilleberg Kaitum 3) and backpacking stoves. After booking your trip, we will send you an email with all the necessary information you will need, including a gear list.

Alaska Range: Stampede Trail & Magic Bus

In the summer time Freedom Trips offers three guided hikes along the Stampede Trail to the Magic Bus. Following Jon Krakauer’s book “Into the Wild” about a young and fairly inexperienced college graduate who travels to Alaska; he eventually dies in the “Magic Bus”. This place became famous and a destination for many travelers all over the world. Each year Alaskan Search and Rescue teams need to rescue people who try to reach the Bus without a guide or adequate preparation and either get lost or swept away in the Teklanika River, a serious hurdle on the way. Remain safe by joining one of our guided hikes. We will pick you up in Anchorage, drive you along the scenic George Parks Highway and walk the Stampede Trail together.

 

Alaska Range: Kesugi Ridge Trail

The Kesugi Ridge may offer the most spectacular multiple day trail hike in Alaska. It begins with an ascent through the woods, later leading you through alpine terrain and over a ridgeline for several days. You will see beautiful lakes, exceptional rock formations and if the weather is good, Denali (Mt. McKinley) and the massive glaciers of the Alaska Range will be visible for some incredible photography. During the hike you will likely see moose, caribou and black bears. Book this trip if you are looking for a classic Alaskan experience – not too difficult, but still wild and with amazing views.


 

Brooks Range: Atigun Pass Circuit

The Atigun Pass Circuit is our shortest hiking expedition in the Brooks Range. After we pick you up at the airport in Deadhorse, you will spend that night in our camp at Happy Valley. The next day we will drive along the Dalton Highway (Haul Road) to Atigun Pass. We start our hike a few miles south and head west into a valley and up a Pass to an elevation of 6,000 ft., where we camp for the night. The remaining days we follow the West Fork Atigun River Valley until we arrive back at the highway. From there we will drive you back to our camp at Happy Valley.

 

Brooks Range: Lupine-Ribdon Route

This hike begins with a bush plane flight over the foothills of the Brooks Range to the headwaters of the Lupine River. We will start hiking upstream following this magnificent valley until we reach a pass which offers great opportunities for afternoon excursions and exploring the hills nearby. On the other side of the pass, we will follow the Ribdon River downstream through its wide open valley. You will likely spot caribou and maybe even wolves or bears wandering the area. We end this fabulous trip by flying back to Happy Valley.

 

Talkeetna Mountains: Eureka Circuit

Our nine day trip in the southern Talkeetna Mountains is a fantastic mix of tundra and forested terrain; hiking on established trails and off trail. We drive along the Glenn Highway near the Matanuska Glacier, here we will follow a trail into the mountains. Later we leave the brushy areas behind and reach Chitna Pass which will lead us into the trail-less tundra and over several plateaus and passes to another trail. Following this trail, we eventually reach Eureka at the Glenn Highway and will be driven back to Anchorage.

 

Brooks Range: Sag River Circuit

We start at the Dalton Highway, close to Atigun Pass and follow a valley upstream until we reach a pass at an elevation of 5,500 feet. The pass offers breathtaking views of glaciers, peaks and, if lucky, you might even spot some Dall sheep on the ridges. We will then descend into the valley of the Upper Sag River and pass by a number of lakes and continue downstream. The Highlight of this trip will be traversing Atigun Gorge which is known for it’s Dall sheep habitat and the remarkable, photogenic bluffs. The hike ends back at the Dalton Highway.

 

Brooks Range: Wind River – Saviuk Route

We fly you to the Upper Wind River on the south side of the Brooks Range. After a few hours of exploring, we leave the tundra and hike through beautiful narrow valleys and alpine terrain. On the second day, we arrive at a perfect campsite on top of a pass with excellent views of a glacier nearby. Then we head further north and reach the valleys of the Ribdon, Lupine and the Saviukviayak River. Here you will be picked up by our bush plane.
This route is one of our guide’s favorites, since it crosses the Continental Divide and leads through plenty of alpine terrain.

 

Brooks Range: Canning River to Lake Schrader

Our pilot will fly you to the Canning River where you will start hiking into the beautiful valley of Franklin Creek. The first couple of days can be quite challenging since our route leads you through some tussocks and brush. However your efforts will be rewarded as soon as we reach the headwaters of Franklin Creek and the area around the pass. Glaciers, moraines and alpine terrain welcome you to the highest mountains in the entire Brooks Range. After spending the day exploring the surrounding area we will continue north and be picked by our bush plane upon arrival at Lake Schrader.

 

Alaska Range: Healy – Wood River Loop

This hike will take you to the beautiful stretches on the the northern side of the Alaska Range. We will follow a trail along Healy Creek until we reach Cody Pass at almost 5,000 feet elevation. On the other side of the pass we will descend to Wood River and follow it downstream until we turn east and climb two passes on our way back to Healy. This is the most interesting part of the entire hike: you will have perfect views of the foothills and the tundra north of the Alaska Range – the route will you take over ridgelines and plateaus that have rarely been traversed before.

 

Brooks Range: From Wind River to the Highway

This is our second longest hike in the Brooks Range, be prepared for a demanding albeit rewarding backcountry experience. The route will lead us over 5 passes and through a variety of diverse terrain, ranging from wide valleys to alpine tundra at an elevation of 5,000 feet. You will be dropped off at Wind River by one of our bush pilots and begin trekking west towards Accomplishment Creek and the Sag River. Expect some difficult hiking stretches, challenging river crossings as well as astonishing country and breathtaking views. After almost two weeks of hiking, you will traverse Atigun Gorge and reach the Dalton highway, where you will be picked up and driven back to our camp at Happy Valley.

 

Alaska Range: Eastern Alaska Range Traverse

This is the most challenging and adventurous hike we offer in Southcentral Alaska. We drive along the scenic Glenn and Richardson Highways to Fielding Lake; we will make camp near the road. The next day our expedition begins. We hike eastward and traverse the moraines of both the Gulkana and Gakona Glaciers, entering the abandoned mining area at Trout Lake a few days later. After hiking over Gillett Pass, we will follow Dry Tok Creek and Tok River to the highway south of Tok. The entire trip is remarkably stunning yet challenging at the same time; seven passes, numerous stream crossings and astonishing views of mountains, glaciers and alpine terrain.

 

Brooks Range: West ANWR Traverse

Our ultimate Brooks Range adventure! After a flight to the Marsh Fork Canning River headwaters, the first three days will be spent hiking through a long, scenic valley until you reach the first of nine Passes on this trip.
We continue hiking and traverse the entire west side of the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, passing numerous plateaus, valleys and streams eventually reaching the Dalton highway by the end of the trip.
After the tenth day we will receive a resupply flown into the mountains by one of our bush pilots so that you won’t need to carry food for the entire three weeks. Regardless, this expedition is a major challenge; it is designed to allow people to experience the wilderness of Arctic Alaska at its very core.
